Neuro Disorders - Boxing Sessions

In our gym, exercises are largely adapted from boxing drills. Boxers condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents.  At Bodyworks Parkinson's and Alzheimer's is the opponent.

Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait, they are rigorous and intended to extend the preceived capabilities of the participant.

Various studies in the 1980's and 1990's supported the notion that regorous exercise, emphasizing gross motor movements, balance, core strength, and rhyth, could favorably impact range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait and activities of daily living. More recent studies focus on the concept of intense "forced" exercise and have begun to suggest that certain kinds of exercise may be neuro-protective, actually slowing disease progression.

Benefits of Boxing

Forcing the body to do movements the brain cannot control, a variety of different movements, quick bursts of movements, footwork and punching all leads to Neuroplasticity - The brains ability to rewire and reorganize itself by forming new neural connections through an alternate pathway, slowing the progression of the disease.
